I've been waiting about 15 years for that other shoe to drop. I suppose my personal silver lining is that I didn't end up working in social welfare law, because now I'd be looking at redundancy. Erm. Well. That unfortunate coincidence aside, the dismantling of the legal systems built-in protections gets me really worked up, ask me in person some time.

I worry about this too. One idea that seems to be gaining some traction as a solution is a "polluter pays" system for access to justice, so the costs of the legal system would be paid by a levy on the sectors that most often provoke claims (the Home Office and Big Business, basically.) It would provide a bigger incentive to reduce the behaviours that lead to claims than the current system does.
